Amper seeks DoT permission for GSM tests

Antonio Fintanini, who is in charge of International business for Amper, said that the equipment is already being tested by Indian cellular operators such as Essar Cellphone, Escotel and Bharti Telecom.

Amper's wireless sets are based on the GSM technology that India's mobile network operates on, the only difference being that Amper's is offering fixed telephone sets that can be fitted in homes.

GSM-based receiver sets is one of the many technology options being used by 'wireless in local loop' equipment manufacturers. According to Fintanini, the advantage of using GSM-based WLL sets is that any investment in setting up a network would be able to offer the service simply by installing the equipment since they have already invested in GSM switching equipment.
