Alcatel South Asia Pacific Limited, one of the largest existing investors in India, plans to invest $200 million in the country in the next two years.

It is placing particular emphasis on the rural telephony sector. George Tsingos, director, Indian sub-continent, said Alcatel would like to be an active player in the provision of TPV (one telephone per village) programme.

Alcatel has extensive experience in the area, having supplied 1.5 million lines to South Africa for exclusive use in rural areas.
