ISRO data may be ferried over the Internet

S Sudhakar, project director of ISRO's Kharagpur Regional Remote Sensing Service Centre, said that plans to this effect are being worked out and a decision is likely to be taken by the end of the month.

The existing system involves the recording of satellite data on tapes and CD-ROMs, which are then sent via the postal system to different centres.

"The tapes and CD-ROMs are likely to be replaced as the satellite data received at the National Remote Sensing Agency at Hyderabad will be available for download by the five regional remote sensing service centres.''

He was unwilling to divulge details on the investment that ISRO is going to make in the project but said that ISRO officials met on November 6 at Bangalore to work out modalities.

The advantages of using the Internet platform to transmit information are quicker transmission and cutting down dependence on external organisations like the postal department, he said.

"Information on natural calamities like floods or the direction of forest fires could be quickly transmitted to the regional remote sensing centres concerned which, in turn, could make the data available to the authorities concerned to prevent extensive damage," he said.

ISRO's five regional remote sensing service centres are located at Bangalore, Kharagpur, Dehradun, Jodhpur and Nagpur. Initial plans involve only connecting ISRO with its five regional remote sensing service centres, this could later be extended to other organisations which will have to pay for an account with ISRO.
