MTNL net profit up 21 per cent

The Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited's net profit has shot up by 21 per cent in six months ending September 30, 1997.

The state-owned telecom major's net profit has increased to Rs 5.28 billion as against Rs 4.36 billion recorded during the same period in the previous year.

The total revenue of the company has increased by 12.99 per cent to Rs 22.41 billion as against Rs 19.83 billion generated in the corresponding

Total expenditure has also shot up by 22.64 per cent, to Rs 11.63 billion from Rs 9.48 billion expended in the six months ending September 1996.

The annualised earnings per share has increased by 21 per cent.

The EPS has increased to Rs 17.62 as against Rs 14.54 recorded in the previous year.

MTNL has been granted the 'navratna' status (a profit making state-owned company and hence can fetch a better share price on divestment) and identified as a company with the potential to become a global giant.
