AP to sell software to other states

The Andhra Pradesh state government intends to become a computerisation consultant to other state government departments.

"The software packages developed for certain major computerisation projects implemented in our state can be customised for use in the other states," said Ranadeep Sudan, additional secretary to the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.

The state has already prepared a pilot project for such applications in the four departments of commercial taxes, employment exchanges, treasury and accounts and transport.

The pilot project for customisation of software packages available for other states would cost Rs 20 million, which the state government sought from the Central government as assistance.

The prototype replication of software for the commercial taxes department, which helps in improved tax monitoring and collection, quick retrieval of dealer-wise details and availability of flexible querying facility, would cost Rs 5 million for a single location for a state.

Likewise, the customisation of application software for employment exchanges would cost around Rs 4 million per exchange. The benefits of computerised exchanges include impartial selection of candidates, up to date maintenance of unemployment records and availability of flexible online queries.

The treasury accounting software can be customised for implementation in the other states at a price of Rs 5 million for one district treasury, while the computerisation of transport department, which covers issuance of driving licences, registration of new vehicles etc can be carried out at a cost of Rs 6 million in one location.

In all these cases, the cost includes computer hardware, system software, customised application software, training and documentation.

Sudan said five States - Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat, Orissa and Jammu and Kashmir - have shown interest and sent their teams to study the various aspects of computerisation.
