Dubai police solves password robbery

Two Indians are among five expatriates arrested by the Dubai police for allegedly making fraudulent use of Internet access numbers of subscribers in the United Arab Emirates, the police said today.

The two were identified only by initials R G And D G. The others were two Pakistanis, H A and A A, and a Yemeni, G A.

A police statement said one of the Pakistanis was found in possession of a list of the secret passwords of some Internet subscribers.

The police had received many complaints from subscribers saying that their passwords were being used without their knowledge and that they were being charged for time that they had not spent on the information superhighway.

One of the complaints was from a woman who said she had received a bill for 3,000 dirhams (about Rs 30,000) for Internet use though she had never actually used her account after subscribing.

Similarly, another complainant had said that he had received high bills for three months during which he had not used the service.

The Emirates Telecommunications Corporation had recently advised all Internet subscribers to change their passwords frequently to maintain the security and confidentiality of their accounts.

"We recommend that passwords be changed at least once a month and a combination of eight letters and numbers be used," a note read.
