Web to cover all of Maharashtra by yearendH Sundaresan, chief general manager, Maharashtra Telecom Circle, Bombay, has announced that all districts in the state would be linked via Internet services by the end of this year.
He made the announcement while addressing reporters after commissioning Internet service facilities in Kolhapur recently.
During current financial year about 400,000 new telephone connections would be provided in the state and after 2002, telephone connections would be provided on demand, he said while replying to a question.
Replying to another question, Sundaresan said after clearance of court, the telecom department would launch its own mobile service within six months because the necessary equipment and infrastructure is already with them.
The central government, in its recently announced telecom policy, permitted the department to launch mobile service. However, due to private operators' opposition, the subject had reached the courts and the proposal has been pending.
The department has concentrated on rural telephone networks with modern technology and by 2002, all tehsils would be linked with optical fibre with district headquarters, he added.
