The Tamil push

Wipro Infotech today launched India's first line matrix and dot matrix printers that can simultaneously print in English and Tamil.

Email this story to a friend. The Wipro Proline LMP range reportedly prints Tamil about five times faster than other printers in its class. The high-speed printers deliver better quality printouts in Tamil, since Tamil fonts are built into the printer.

The Wipro dot matrix printer is the only multilingual printer in India capable of printing in eight languages - Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi and English. It can also print three languages at a time.

Two languages, English and Hindi, are built into the printer, the third can be downloaded into the printer. The printer also comes bundled with a free Indian language word processor software, valued at Rs 1,300.

Anandakrishnan, vice-chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, said that since Tamil was extensively used in schools, colleges and government offices, Wipro's effort to live up to local standards too was a step in the right direction.

According to Vineet Agarwal, chief executive, Wipro Infotech Peripheral Systems, local language printing is an emerging market in India, and with computerization moving to the smaller towns and villages, there was a bigger need for doing business in the local language.

He pointed out that Wipro had already launched line matrix printers and dot matrix printers that can print in Hindi.

Wipro developed the Tamil printing technology along with Printronix, a US-based manufacturer and leader in the Line Matrix Printer market worldwide.

Wipro Peripherals launched Printronix branded products in India in 1996 and today enjoys an India market share close to 50 per cent.

Besides LMPs and DMPs, Wipro Infotech Peripherals Systems manufactures and markets Inkjet printers, laser printers and storage solutions from leading manufacturers. Wipro Infotech is a part of the Rs 22,000-million Wipro Corporation, which is involved in information technology software, services and systems, consumer care and lighting brands and healthcare technology services.
