SGI steps in to tap ISP business

Silicon Graphics Systems (India) Limited has unveiled a comprehensive Internet strategy designed to enable Internet service providers lower the cost to customers for accessing the Internet in India.

According to Jansen Ek, vice-president, Silicon Graphics Inc, Asia-Pacific Region, "India is taking large strides towards an Internet revolution and Silicon Graphics is going to power it."

Detailing the initiative, a senior executive from SGI said the strategy is based upon the fact that the cost of money in India is one of the highest in the world. Indian ISPs will endeavour to launch their services with as low an upfront investment as possible.

"Each SGI server provides twice as many users to have simultaneous access as compared to any comparable competitive system," he claimed.

Elaborating on the performance aspect, the executive maintained that "Silicon Graphics offers to ISPs guarantees for uninterrupted operation, performance, optimisation, and uptime, allowing ISPs to further enter into service-level agreements and the quality of service with their clients."

While Silicon Graphics has reportedly partnered with the other ISPs such as AOL, GTE/BBN, World Access, AT&T through its professional services organisation, the alliances are expected to bring in India a comprehensive mix of business understanding and the technology perspective specially tailored for the country's environment.
