Smart cards for everyone, says Seshagiri

The home ministry has launched one of the largest ever information technology projects in the country to issue identity cards to Indian citizens and work permits to immigrants, claimed Dr N Seshagiri, member-convenor of the Prime Minister's Task Force on Information Technology.

and business opportunities at the IT.Com industry jamboree in Bangalore this week, Dr Seshagiri said the initiative would not only check largescale influx of illegal immigrants but also check inter-state migration that has been growing at an alarming rate.

Dr Seshagiri is also the director general of the National Imformatics Centre.

Claiming that about a million people crossed over illegally from Bangladesh into India, he said such things happen when there is no proper monitoring mechanism.

He said the Rs 26 billion project would be based on smart card technology. The state owned Chandigarh based Semiconductor Complex Limited would be involved in its implementation.
