Cash-strapped Goa bans extravagant govt business

The Goa goverment which is facing a financial crisis, has banned all official foreign junkets and air travel within the country by certain category of officials.

The state government, in a directive issued by the finance commissioner Rakesh Mehta, has also put a total ban on seminars, workshops, symposia and similar activities at the cost of the government.

This is one of the measures to bring financial discipline in the state which is gradually slipping into a debt trap.

Heavy salary bill of the government staff, extravangance in working styles, besides pilferage and losses of revenue in excise, electricity and other revenue earning departments, are also causing concern, according to top state government officials.
