Statistical Highlights 6th match: New Zealand v Bangladesh at Chelmsford, 17-5-1999

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1448th in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was the 164th in World Cup history

This match was New Zealand's 324th and Bangladesh's 31st in LOIs

This was New Zealand's 36th WC match, while for Bangladesh this was its first match. However, Bangladesh has now became the most experienced LOI team to appear in a WC. England was appearing in its 16th LOI match when it first played the WC in 1975

Bangladesh became the 16th team to appear in the WC. Just for the record, Bangladesh first appeared in a LOI match on 31-3-1986 against Pakistan at Moratuwa in Sri Lanka.

This match was the second LOI match between the two sides. The teams last met at Sharjah on 28-4-1990. New Zealand had won by 161 runs.

The County Ground, New Writtle Street at Chelmsford at Essex was hosting its only second LOI match. The last match was played during the 1983 World Cup when India beat Australia by 118 runs on 20-6-1983, to qualify for the semi-final for the first time.

Zimbabwean Ian Robinson was umpiring his 63rd LOI match, while India's S Venkataraghvan was officiating in his 21st match.

Openers Mehrab Hossain (101) and Shahriyar Hossain (95) who have two of the highest individual scores in LOIs for Bangladesh were dismissed for 2 and 0 respectively.

Gavin Larsen's catch of Akram Khan of his own bowling was his third in the WC. Now only Pakistani Asif Iqbal and fellow Kiwi Chris Harris have more such dismissals - four in the WC.

The partnership of 34 runs between Naimur Rahman & Enamul Hoque was Bangladesh's third best for the 8th wicket in LOIs. The best however remains as 46 between Amin ul Islam and Golam Faruq against Sri Lanka at Dhaka on 2-11-1988.

Chris Harris' wicket of Enamul Hoque was his 22nd in the WC in his 14th match. He now equals the tally of Richard Hadlee to become the joint highest wicket-taker for New Zealand in the WC.

The tenth wicket partnership of 20 runs between Hasibul Hussain and Manjural Islam was Bangladesh's second best in LOIs. The pair just fell short of the record 25 runs between Saif-ul Islam and Anis-ur Rahman against India at Sharjah on 5-4-1995

Both Gavin Larsen and Chris Cairns now have the best bowling figures (3-19) for New Zealand against Bangladesh. The previous best was 2-41 by Jonathan Millmow at Sharjah on 28-4-1990.

Larsen's figures of 10-0-19-3 equals New Zealand's best economical 10-over-spell in the WC. Dipak Patel against West Indies at Auckland in the 1992 WC had figures of 10-2-19-1. However the best for NZ in a WC match remains as 12-6-10-0 by Richard Hadlee against East Africa at Birmingham in 1975.

Bangladesh's total of 116 in 37.4 overs was the eight lowest in a WC match and the third lowest in a 50-over WC match.

The total of 116 was the lowest at this ground. Australia had made 129 in 38.2 overs against India in 1983 WC.

Bangladesh's total was the fourth lowest made against New Zealand in LOIs by any team. Australia (70, Adelaide, 27-1-1986), India (113, Perth, 18-1-1986) and Sri Lanka (115, Colombo, 1-4-1984) are the only teams to score less.

No hundreds have been scored as yet in this WC after the first round of matches. In 1979 WC a hundred each was scored in the first and the last match of the tournament.

Gavin Larsen playing in his 114th match won his fifth Man of the match award. It was his first in a WC match.
