At the other end, Adam Gilchrist looked in more fluent touch but again, Powell produced brilliance - in the form of a shorter delivery at pace, that pushed Gilchrist back in defense.
The ball jagged back in, caught Gilchrist indeterminate, and took the inside edge for Denesh Ramdhin to move to his left and hold well. Gilchrist, good for him, walked, saving umpire Asad Rauf the trouble (7/9; 10/1; Hayden at the time 0/16).
Ricky Ponting came out and from the first ball he faced, sought to establish his considerable presence. The Australian skipper is always ready to take on the best of the opposition bowlers, and on the day it was clearly Powell - so Powell had to go.
He did. An attempted bouncer in the 7th over saw Ponting swivel into the hook, over the deep square leg ropes - an amazing shot to play that early in the innings, after an early setback.
Corey Colleymore, the most controlled of West Indies bowlers, was brought in for the 10th over, and Ponting went after him, taking a good length delivery outside off and smashing it, short arm, to the long off fence. The treatment of the next ball was even better - to a delivery on off, Ponting glided forward, got right on top of the ball, and flicked with effortless ease over square leg for another four.
