New York Stock Exchange bans al-Jazeera

March 26, 2003 01:11 IST

The New York Stock Exchange has decided to withdraw the accreditation of two journalists from al-Jazeera, a popular Arabic-language TV network, according to a report on the Web site of the Guardian.

According to the report, the channel, in its broadcast on Tuesday, said: "Al-Jazeera has received an official letter from the New York Stock Exchange informing it that the station's financial reporters can no longer present their reports from the exchange."

The NYSE has banned reporters Ammar al-Sankari and Ramzi Shiber "because of al-Jazeera's coverage of the war on Iraq", the channel was quoted as saying.

NYSE spokesperson Ray Pellechia denied the charge. He said the exchange had chosen to limit the number of broadcasters working at the exchange since the war began and concentrate "our efforts on those... providing responsible business coverage".

Al-Jazeera has extensively covered the widespread Arab criticism of the war on Iraq.

A couple of days ago it showed Iraqi TV images of American prisoners of war -- a decision that has come in for criticism in the US.
