A 20-year-old Indo-Canadian woman was killed in a car accident in Toronto earlier this week.
Sargam Sawhney was travelling with her husband Sukhvinder and three others in a car, when it was struck violently from behind at about 0110 GMT on January 27, Peel regional police constable Heather Andrews said.
In an official media release and telephone interview on January 30, Constable Andrews told rediff.com, "Four people injured in the accident were rushed to the Credit Valley Hospital."
Owing to the serious nature of her injuries Sawhney was transported to the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, where she died a few hours later. The driver of the car that struck Sawhney's car fled, but the vehicle's front licence plate was left behind at the scene.
Christopher Cory Dewsbury, 22, who was at the time of the tragedy driving a rental was later arrested. He turned himself in around 1 am on January 28, about 24 hours after the accident.
Sawhney came to Canada only three years ago. Her family still lives in India. "She had done a hospital management course, and she was now taking some computer courses at the Toronto School of Business," said her sister-in-law Jasvinder Sawhney. "They were coming from my place -- it was my birthday," she said.
Sargam and Sukhvinder had married in a civil ceremony on December 23 and were going to have the traditional wedding on February 16. Sargam's mother and brother were in Toronto for the wedding, but her father was to come in time for the traditional wedding.
Constable Andrews said Dewsbury appeared in the court on January 29 for a bail hearing, but the hearing was put off to February 3. Till then he will remain incarcerated. "He is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident," she said.
Sukhvinder and three other passengers received some cuts and bruises on parts of their bodies. Outside the courtroom, Sukhvinder said he was confident that justice would be done in the case, "but I am never going to get her back."
Replying to a question, Andrews said if Dewsbury is found guilty, he could get the maximum life sentence.
