Lashkar-e-Tayiba chief Hafeez Saeed Wednesday denied that his organisation had anything to do with Tuesday morning's terrorist attacks on the United States.
"We have no involvement and somebody is defaming the Lashkar-e-Tayiba by claiming that the attacks were carried out by us," Saeed told rediff.com.
"Somebody is purposely spreading this rumour so that Pakistan can be declared as terrorist state," said Saeed.
He, however, refused to give his reaction to the attack on United States.
Zaki-Ur-Rehman, commander of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba's military wing, said, "We did not plan this attack and rumours are being spread to malign us."
Earlier, a news agency had reported that the organisation had claimed responsibility for the attack.
"The attack was carried out by our fidayeen (suicide squad) led by commander Abu Samama," Lashkar spokesman Khalid Saif had reportedly said in a statement faxed to the news agency in Pakistan.
"The attacks on the World Trade Center and other places were not an act of terrorism, but an Islamic duty," the statement had reportedly said.
The organisation is one of the most powerful and extremist Islamic groups fighting a jihad or holy war against India in Jammu and Kashmir.
