Taleban on verge of collapse, Al Qaeda on run: Bush

T V Parasuram in Washington

The United States has said the Taleban militia has been routed, and terrorist mastermind Osama bin-Laden's Al Qaeda is on the run.

"We have destroyed the Taleban military. They are in total confusion. The government that used to hate women, and not educate its children, and disrupt humanitarian supplies, and destroy religious symbols of other religions is now in rout," US President George W Bush said.

"And we have got Al Qaeda on the run, too. Now, they think they can hide, but they can't hide for long. And they think they can run, but they can't run forever, because we will patiently, diligently, pursue them until they are brought to justice," Bush said while addressing a conference of US attorneys.

Bush expressing the resolve to fight global terrorism said, "Afghanistan is the first overseas front in this war against terror. And I am pleased to report that the (US) military is performing really well. In a short period of time, most of the country now is in the hands of our allies and friends."

Meanwhile, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Stufflebeem said, "Of those Taleban forces that still have their commanders with them, some are negotiating for the surrender of their forces. Others might take Mullah Omar's orders literally and intend to dig in defensively and fight to the death. So it is kind of a full gamut here."
