Taleban willing to surrender Kunduz

The Taleban fighters are willing to surrender the northern Afghanistan city of Kunduz under the supervision of the United Nations, a Pakistani daily quoted a militia commander as saying.

The Dawn quoted Mulla Fazil as saying that the offer was prompted by American bombings, which had killed more than 1,000 people in the Kunduz area and the neighbouring Khanabad district.

"We have authorised the governor of the province to take necessary steps in this respect," Fazil told the daily.

However, he made it clear that the militia would not surrender to the Northern Alliance.

"We don't trust them," he said, and added that the troops would give themselves up only to a neutral authority like the UN.
