Northern Alliance troops
ready to enter Kabul

Opposition Northern Alliance Troops on Monday morning stood ready to enter Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, even as Taleban forces began withdrawing from the city.

Some reporters in Kabul said opposition forces have already entered Kabul. There is, however, no independent confirmation of this.

Fifty or 60 troops of the Northern Alliance, with their distinctive pakool caps, were seen entering the city, an AFP reporter said.

The US, which has helped the alliance in its march towards the capital with continuous bombing of Taleban frontlines, has asked opposition forces to remain outside the capital till a post-Taleban alternative government is put in place.
