The Legend Behind Kanyakumari

The tale goes that Parvati came down to earth as a virginal goddess-maiden, named Kanya Devi. Kanya Devi was out to win, by penance, the hand of Lord Shiva in marriage. Shiva agreed and was due to arrive at the wedding mandapam by the stroke of midnight. But as is the case with tales of mythology, some wicked or rather naughty forces were in play too. The devas or god people wished to see Kanya Devi remain a virgin. They conspired that Narada munni would take the avatar of a rooster and arrived at the scene. To fool Lord Shiva he crowed well before it was midnight. On hearing the crowing of the rooster, Lord Shiva believed he had already missed the ceremony and went home bachelor.

Kanya Devi's idol at the seaside Kumari Amman temple wears a nose ring that reflects a powerful beam out to sea. And nearby the footprints of Kanya Devi are visible.
