Fast Facts

Solang Valley is located at an altitude of about 2,050 metres above sea level. Solang Nallah is close to the banks of the brisk, snow-fed Beas river and the magnificent Rohtang Pass. The incomparable charm of the countryside around makes this area one of the most popular destinations in the state. The towering, snow-capped mountains, the clear blue skies, the green meadows, the fast flowing rivers, the mysterious forests, exotic flora and fauna and absence of over-tourism gives Solang rare beauty.

The Himachal Pradesh tourism office, tel # 01902-53531 in Manali can organise tours, skiing, trekking and para gliding through approved firms to the valley. Para-gliding is organised by various companies in Manali. Two popular firms are:

  • Himalayan Adventure Tourism, tel # 01902-52182
  • Roshan Thakur, tel # 01902-56509, 56554
The para-gliding season begins post monsoon, in October, and ends by early December. The skiing season begins in late December and lasts till February

Close to the Solang valley is Jagatsukh -- which is famous for its temples dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva -- and Nagger which has the Roerich Art Gallery that exhibits paintings of the Russian painter, Nicholas Roerich. There is also a massive wooden fortress.

Solang is easily accessible from Manali by road. The nearest airport is at Bhuntar, over 50 km away. The nearest rail head is at Shimla, 290 km away.

It is advisable to base one's self in Manali where cheap, comfortable or even exotic accommodation is easily available and make trips to the Solang Valley and the surrounding countryside.
