How to get there

The Surajkund Crafts Mela was formally inaugurated on February 1, as it has been for the past decade. Fixing the dates on the tourism calendar is only one of the pragmatic steps taken by the organisers. The others relate to very simple though effective measures which ensure a large turnout.

These include easy logistics by way of access to public transport headed straight for the mela grounds from important points in Delhi and the surrounding suburbs. Free entry, totally, for school-children. Highly subsidised entry rates of Rs 100 flat rate for special-interest groups of any sort upto 75-100 people. Offered to are nominated parking sites closer to the entry gates for senior citizens and handicapped people. No motor vehicles at all, regardless of the status of the person, beyond the main Charminar entry gate.

Specially marked buses carrying sign-boards in English and Hindi (Mela Special) to Surajkund Crafts Mela will be available at regular intervals of 30 minutes, and additional buses shall be deployed if required, from:

  • ISBT Kashmere Gate, Raj Ghat, Delhi Gate, Pragati Maidan, Sarai Kale Khan Bus Terminus/Hazrat Nizamuddin, Ashram Chowk,Badarpur. Daily 0800 hours onwards.

  • Haryana Emporium at Baba Kharak Singh Marg (Connaught Place), Central Secretariat, AIIM.Sc. Daily 0830 hours onwards.

  • Faridabad Bus Terminus, Canal Colony, Old Faridabad, Badarpur. Daily 0800 hours onwards.

  • Return bus services shall be available till 2000 hours.

Last year's mela attracted over 300,000 visitors. A feature of this mela is that no craftsmen are permitted to participate for more than 3 years in total, nor are they permitted for any two years in succession. The accent is towards what can be called "languishing crafts", and the down-stream effect of this mela has seen many craftsmen break out of the mould of poverty-stricken middlemen dependant artisans into fully-fledged businessmen themselves.

Surajkund is located on the Badarpur-Mehrauli road and is about 11km from Qutb Minar, Delhi. They are several other interesting sights nearby.

Where to stay

Haryana Tourism runs several hotels at Surajkund. However during the fair they are likely to get quite booked. Do book in advance. Otherwise do Surajkund as a day trip and stay in Delhi.
