Millennium Destinations: Fast Facts

Reaching any of the destinations suggested during millennium high season may pose difficulties, depending on where you are beginning your journey from.

Airline reservations are more easily accessible and are a better bet. Jet Airways, Indian Airlines and Sahara Airlines will all be flying -- inspite of the Y2K hysteria -- even on December 31 and January 1. Indian Airlines may club certain flights together on January 1 because of poor load but destinations will not get knocked out of the network even on that day. Seats are available on most sectors except to Goa. But Indian Airines has just introduced a special flight to combat the passenger rush to Goa and at the moment tickets are available.

India has one of the largest rail networks in the world. Yet at high season the rail system invariably gets overloaded and finding a seat is an uphill struggle. Rail bookings will be difficult proposition for domestic travellers and availability is often better in more expensive classes. It may be easier to reach any of these destinations by breaking the journey into different sections and taking day trains. Foreign passport holders however can avail of the tourist quota that is available from the four major metros. Tourists need to merely head to the tourist ticket booking window at the station the day before their intended journey. The window usually opens at 0800 hours and it is advisable to queue well before it opens.

Driving or utilising bus services are the safest/definite option. But again it depends on where you are beginning your journey and where you are headed.
