Historical UpdateIn 1665 the British officially took over the seven islands of Bombay from the Portuguese after it was gifted to Charles II in his dowry on his marriage to Catherine of Braganza. And in 1668 His Majesty's government leased out these humid, tropical islands to the East India Company for £10 a year and the construction of colonial Bombay began. A customhouse, a warehouse, a quay and a few forts came up. A map of Bombay drawn up between 1746 and 1766 had the location of the Governor's House already pencilled in. But is likely that the Raj Bhavan as it exists today was completed in 1819. Sir Evan Nepean, for whom nearby Nepean Sea road is named, was the first governor to occupy this palatial estate, with its own private beach , in 1819. |
