Fast FactsThe Courtallam falls, also called the Kuttalam falls, in the Eastern Ghats, consists of nine waterfalls. The most popular falls is, as its name suggests, the Main falls, formed when Chittar river falls over a precipice through some 90 metres. Nearby are two temples -- the Chitra Sabha and the Thirukutralanathar temple. To avoid the crowds try visiting the falls on a week day. The ideal season for viewing the falls is from June to late August. Bathing at night is a special thrill. The falls are well lit. But it's teeth-chatteringly cold.Where to stayCourtallam has several lodges that cater to the monsoon hordes. If it is comfort you are looking for then Courtallam is an ideal day trip by road from Trivandrum where accommodation for all budgets is available. Otherwise the most decent rooms available in the neighbourhood of the waterfalls are at Tenakasi, five km away:

Try Hotel Tamil Nadu.How to get thereThe Courtallam falls is just 1 1/2 hours away from Tirunelveli by road. Several trains from Madras pull into Tirunelveli daily including the Bombay-Nagercoil Express. It is also possible to reach Courtallam from Quilon/Madurai via Sengottai. Sengottai, from where it is possible to get fast buses to the falls, is on the Quilon-Madurai train line. The Quilon Mail and the Quilon-Nagore Express stop at Sengottai.By road, Courtallam is also easily accessible from Trivandrum ( approximately 185 kms away).
