Ask a bunch of friends to describe the typical Bengali woman, and one adjective they all use is 'voluptuous'. And you know why they get that way? Because Bengalis boast the mother of all sweet tooths (or is that teeth? No matter...) So if you are en route to Calcutta, forget to pack the tape measure and calorie counter, and go have yourself a ball at the nearest sweetmeat shop.

Another thing Bengalis are famed for is fish preparations - in which, they claim, they are second to none. People from the Konkan to Kerala might debate that point, but the fact is that Calcuttans cook fish in a pretty toothsome fashion.

And oh yes, Calcutta, for some strange reason, boasts the most authentic Chinese food this side of Beijing.
