Sweden defender and captain Patrik Andersson is out of the World Cup because of a thigh injury, Swedish public television SVT reported on Thursday.

The 30-year-old had missed Sweden's three group matches against England, Nigeria and Argentina but a recent scan showed that a thigh muscle had been torn.

Andersson will need up to three weeks to recover from the injury which he sustained during pre-World Cup training.

"That's life," Andersson told the television channel. "Now it's all about fighting to get back to fitness."

Andersson was replaced in all three games by Andreas Jakobsson, with Celtic's Johan Mjallby taking on the role as captain. Sweden play Senegal on Sunday in the second round.
