India have it easy in tennis

India's men's and women's teams made a mockery of their first round opponents to register facile victories in the tennis team events in the 14th Asian Games in Busan on Wednesday.

While the men's team spanked debutants East Timor 3-0 in a totally lopsided contest to romp into the quarter-finals, the women's team also had an easy outing, thrashing lowly Mongolia by an identical margin to march into the last eight.

Star player Leander Paes, who brushed aside a minor ankle injury to take the court, gave India a rousing start by whipping Matias DeSouza 6-0, 6-0 in a match that lasted just a little over 40 minutes.

Rohan Bopanna, who played the second singles, also did not have to sweat much as he demolished Antonio Mendes 6-0, 6-0 to give India an invincible 2-0 lead.

In the doubles, the Indian duo of Rohan Bopanna and Sunil Kumar Sipaeya combined well to carve out a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Antonio Mendes and Matias DeSouza to give India a 3-0 victory.

The men's team will now take on the winner of the Uzbekistan - Mongolia second round match in the quarters.

In the women's team event, Sania Mirza won her singles match against Mongolia's Enkhjargal Khaliun 6-0, 6-1, while Rushmi Chakravarty blanked Khandsuren Khishataqlokh 6-0, 6-0 in the second singles match.

In the doubles, Nirupama Vaidyanathan and Rushmi Chakravarty toyed with the Mongolian duo of Enkhjargal Khaliun and Natsagsuren Jigjidsuren to register a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

The women's team will now take on Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals.
