India wins 2 gold medals in Asian Youth Judo Championships

Poorva Mathew from Mumbai and Amit Kumar from Punjab won a gold medal each in the men's and women's section respectively of the inaugural Asian Youth Judo championships at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

Poonam defeated Jennet Geldivayeva of Turkmenistan in the 40 kg category while Amit thrashed Hossein Banna of Iran in 45 kg category as 103 players -- boys and girls under 16 years -- from 17 countries contested in Hyderabad on Monday, said a press release issued by the Judo Federation of India on Wednesday.

India bagged a haul of 11 medals, including six silver and three bronze.

Sandhya L Bam (48 kg), Nirmala Devi I Bam (52 kg), Kh Hemabad Devi (63 kg), Sunibala Devi M (63 kg), Romon Singh (60 kg) all from Manipur and and Ajay Singh (42 kg) from Haryana won the silver medals for India.

Pooja Dhanda (57 kg), her Haryana teammate in 66 kg and Chaoba Devi KH (44 kg) of Manipur won the bronze in the event on Monday.
