National champion Chetan Anand scored an impressive victory over 11th seed Chan Yan Kit of Hong Kong to advance to the second round of the men's singles in the Thailand Open badminton championships in Bangkok.

The world No 35 Indian ace showed fine form to outplay Kit Yan, ranked 13 places above, and win 21-13, 21-17.

Chetan will play Scot Evans of Ireland in the second round.

Anup Sridhar also moved to the second round after registering a 21-16, 21-17 victory over Andreas Adityawarman of Indonesia.

Apart from these two, four other Indians exited from the men's singles draw.

But the biggest disappointment came in the women's singles, where Saina Nehwal [Images] bowed out after a straight games loss to Xing Aiying of Singapore in the first round.

Ranked 31 in world, Saina went down 21-13, 21-16 to Aiying, who is three notches below her in the singles rankings.

Trupti Murgunde, however, got the better of Maja Tvrdy of Slovenia 21-14, 21-13 to reach the second round, where she will play Juliane Schenk of Germany [Images].

In other men' singles matches P Kashyap gave a tough fight to Kenn Lim of Malaysia but went down 21-19, 13-21, 21-11.

Kenn Lim will next play Sridhar in the next round.

Ajay Jayaram also made Hong Kong's Wei Ng sweat but failed to emerge a winner, going down 19-21, 21-14, 21-10.

Veteran Nikhil Kanetkar squandered an advantageous position before going 7-21, 21-15, 21-10 to Sheng Shium Liao of Chinese Taipei.

Anand Pawar lost to Eric Pang of the Netherlands 21-11, 21-15.
