Sunday athletics in Mumbai

The Bombay City District Amateur Athletic Association (BCDAAA) will resume its Sunday athletics meets from September 17.

"The Sunday Athletics Meetings 2006 (SAM'06) will be held on six Sundays, starting from September 17, till October 22, 2006, at the picturesque synthetic track of Priyadarshini Park, Nepeansea Road in Mumbai," Rahul Pawar, organizing secretary of SAM'06, said in a statement on Monday.

The Sunday athletics meetings, popularly called morning meets during the 60s and 70s, were used by Indian athletics legends like Edward Sequeira, Adille Sumariwalla, Alex Silveira, Savio D'Souza and Bakhtawar Khambata to test their performance during off-season.

With the aim to rejuvenate interest in athletics, these weekly meetings are open to all individuals, schools, colleges, institutions, organizations, athletics clubs of Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburb and Thane District.

Fifty-eight events will be held for 16 age groups, including a special category for veterans.

Following are the age groups:

Boys: Under-10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

Girls: Under-10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

Men, veteran men; women, veteran women.

The top eight performers in each group in series will qualify for the mega event - 'Bombay Athletics Final - in December.

Life Insurance Corporation of India is associate sponsor for SAM'06. More sponsorship offers are available for the corporate world.

Entries open on September 8 and will be accepted at The Bombay City District Amateur Athletic Association, Brabourne Stadium (North Stand), Veer Nariman Road, Mumbai- 400020, between 1400 and 1800 hours.
