It was a day of mixed fortunes for India at the French Open with Leander Paes [Images] entering the second round and Sania Mirza [Images] bowing out in the mixed doubles at Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday.

Paes and Russian Maria Kirilenko shrugged off a patchy display to beat America's Mike Bryan and Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

On the other hand, Sania and Australian Paul Hanley [Images] staged a late recovery but it was not enough to prevent a 0-6, 4-6 defeat to another US combination, Martina Navratilova and Bob Bryan.

Paes and Kirilenko face the French pairing of Severine Bremond and Marc Gicquel in the second round.
