Despite request from Athletics Federation of India members, Suresh Kalmadi on Tuesday stuck to his decision to resign from the post of President.

The members had moved a motion requesting Kalmadi to take back his decision at an AFI Executive Committee meeting but the latter stood firm. Veteran AFI member Umrao Singh will be the caretaker President till a successor to Kalmadi is elected.

Kalmadi had tendered his resignation last week citing increased responsibilities. He holds the Indian Olympic Association presidency as also that of Asian Athletics Association.

Kalmadi, a Member of Parliament, is also leading India's bid to hos 2014 Asian Games and 2016 Olympics [Images].

Besides, he is also the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman. Kalmadi had said that these responsibilities would keep him out of India for long periods in the years to come.
