David Beckham [Images] plans to discuss a new contract with Real Madrid [Images] in the next few months, but the former England [Images] captain has not yet agreed an extension to his current deal with the Spanish club.

"The intention on both sides is to sit down and talk over a new deal in the autumn," a spokesman for Beckham said on Monday. "No new deal has been agreed at the moment."

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said on Sunday that he hoped the 31-year-old midfielder would sign a two-year extension to his deal which expires at the end of the season.

"We all want him to stay with us," Calderon told Spanish state television. "We would like him to renew his contract for two more years.

"The coaching staff and the club both agree that he is an important player and have given the go-ahead to a new deal that we hope will be settled in the coming weeks or months."

Beckham joined Real Madrid on a four-year contract from Manchester United [Images] in 2003, but has yet to win a major trophy at the club.

He has said on a number of occasions that he is happy at Real and plans to remain with them until the end of his career.

Beckham stepped down as England captain after this year's World Cup and has been dropped from the squad by new coach Steve McClaren.
