A Chinese footballer underwent an operation on his skull after being attacked outside a restaurant over the weekend, newspapers reported on Monday.

Chen Yongqiang, a striker with Chinese Super League team Shenzhen Jianlibao, was attacked early on Saturday morning in the southern city of Shenzhen.

Chen is no longer in critical condition following the operation, the Beijing [Images] News reported, but doctors at his club said his career could be threatened by further injuries to his arm.
