East Bengal showcauses Douglas

May 08, 2004 20:57 IST

East Bengal showcaused their Brazilian medio Douglas da Silva on Saturday for failing to accompany the team to Goa, where the club is slated to play the last two matches of the eighth National Football League.

Disclosing this, club football secretary Santosh Bhattacharya said that as the Brazilian refused to receive the letter, it was re-sent to him by registered post.

In the letter, Douglas was asked to explain why steps should not be taken against him as he did not accompany the team to Goa without giving any reason.

"By not receiving the letter from the employer (East Bengal club) he has committed another serious offence. We have sent copies of the missive to the All India Football Federation and the Indian Football Association," Bhattacharya said.

The East Bengal official said that after waiting for a reasonable time for the response, the club's disciplinary committee - to be constituted by the President and Secretary - would take up the matter to decide the next course of action.

Douglas was not available for comment.

East Bengal, who have already assured themselves of the title, play Churchill Brothers on Sunday, before wrapping up their engagements against Haywards Sporting on May 12.
