Sania enters pre-quarters in Belgium

May 28, 2003 10:11 IST

Second seed Sania Mirza of India entered the pre-quarter-finals of the ITF Grade 1 tournament at the Astrid Bowl, Belgium, on Tuesday.

The Hyderabad lass defeated Sarah Raab of Germany 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in a tough second round match to earn a meeting with Marta Domachowska of Poland in the pre-quarter-final round. Sania had bye in the first round.

She admitted that clay is not her best surface.

Marta defeated Alexandra Karavaeva of Russia 6-1, 6-1 in her second round match.

However, Sanaa Bhambri lost to top seed Ryoko Fuda of Japan 1-6, 4-6 in her second round match.

Sanaa was level 2-2 in the second set when she fell and injured herself. But despite her movement being hampered, the 15-year old girl continued sportingly and even won two more games before completing the match.

Karan Rastogi and Somdev Dev Verman, the other two members of the AITA sponsored team touring Europe, lost in the first round in the boys section on Tuesday.

There is no news about the doubles draw, where the Indians will be in action again.
