Mohd. Sporting down Punjab cops

March 31, 2003 20:26 IST

Mohammedan Sporting Club overwhelmed Punjab Police 2-0 while Haywards Sporting Clube de Goa came from behind to defeat Allwyn Hindustan, Delhi, 2-1 in the two Group 'B' matches in the Second Division National Football League in Jamshedpur on Monday.

Mohammedan Sporting mounted pressure on Punjab Police right from the beginning, making several unsuccessful forays into the rival goal. However, they had to wait till the 31st minute to forge ahead, their overseas recruit E Gray heading home.

After the lemon break, Punjab Police tried hard to equalise but an alert Mohammedan defence thwarted each move.

The Kolkata outfit increased the margin in the 84th minute when substitute A Sarkar found the net with a powerful shot.

In the other match, Allwyn Hindustan started off well, but could not score in the first-half which remained goalless. However, in the second-half their aggressive moves paid off when, in the 52nd minute, Abdul Seriki scoredl

But their joy did not last long as the Goa team drew level. Striker C Jotin Singh, who replaced Francis Andrade in the 46th minute, restored parity eight minutes later.

Thereafter both teams fought hard to increase the margin, but Sporting Clube had the last laugh when a Peter Pereira pass deflected off an Allwyn defender to enter the goal.
