Atwal takes three-stroke lead

February 22, 2003 11:24 IST

India's Arjun Atwal moved into a three-stroke lead at the Malaysian Open after the rain-affected second round was completed on Saturday morning.

Atwal carded a six-under-par 65 to move to 15-under-par at the end of his round in the co-sanctioned event being played on the Mines Resort course.

The 29-year-old Kolkata-born golfer had managed to play just seven holes of his second round on Friday before a violent thunderstorm flooded the course.

He resumed on Saturday morning and birdied two of his closing four holes to end the round three strokes clear of South African Retief Goosen, who had finished 24 hours earlier with a seven-under-par 64 for a 12-under-par total.

Sweden's Fredrik Andersson and Korean Ted Oh are tied for third place at 11-under-par, one stroke clear of Ireland's Padraig Harrington and Thailand's Thammanoon Srirot.

Anderssson, who shared the first round lead with Atwal, birdied his closing two holes in a round of 70.

England's Lee Westwood, winner of the 1997 Malaysian Open, added a four-under-par 67 to his earlier round of 66 to finish at nine-under-par.

The third round began immediately after the conclusion of the second with Atwal and Goosen due to tee off in the final pairing in the late afternoon.
