Vasco beat Punjab Police

Goa's Vasco Sports Club maintained their winning run in the Tata National Football League, with a 2-1 victory over Punjab Police 2-1 in Jalandhar on Friday.

The victory took Vasco to second place, one point behind Zee Churchill, another Goan soccer powerhouse, who have 25 points.

Playing after a remarkable 2-1 victory over Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan, Vasco turned on the heat on lowly-placed Punjab Police from the very beginning and led 1-0 at half-time through an Agnelo Gomes goal, in 36th minute.

Their ace striker Rui Wanderley, whose brace floored Bagan in the previous match, made it 2-0 in 63rd minute.

The policemen, who are tottering at the bottom of the 12-team league with just four points, reduced the margin through a penalty goal, coverted by Gurinder Pal Singh shortly before the final whistle.

Earlier Punjab Police forward Sher Singh missed two opportunities in the first half, the Goa team's custodin proving the stumbling block on both the occasions.
