Ajay Ramaswamy goes down fighting

Ajay Ramaswamy of India lost a close semi-final match to Andrew Nisker of Canada in the $10,000 Canada F1 Satellite tennis tournament in Mississauga, near Toronto, Canada, on Saturday.

The unseeded Indian went down 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), in a match which was played indoors on hard courts due to wet weather.

Ramaswamy, ranked 899 on the ATP, played a smart, powerful baseline game, but could not capitalize on the opportunities which came his way. In the end, the Canadian hung in and won the two tough tie-breakers.

The Indian had shocked the lone Canadian left in the draw, by running through the first set 6-1. However, the Canadian lifted his game and went on to win the next two games in tie-breaker and take the match.

Earlier, Ramaswamy pulled off the best upset win of his career, defeateding second seed Thomas Blake of the United States 7-5, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals on Friday.

In the doubles draw, Ajay Ramaswamy and Sunil Kumar Sipaeya went down to fourth seeds Josh Goffi of the United States and Michael Tebbutt of Australia 2-6, 3-6 in the quarter-finals.
