Jose nets winner for Vasco

Vasco, Goa, survived a barrage of attacks from F C Kochin in the dying minutes before prevailing 1-0 in a 19th round National Football League match in Kochi on Monday.

The all-important goal was scored by Brazilian medio Luciano Jose in the 38th minute of the first half.

With this win, Vasco swelled their points tally to 34 from 19 matches while F C Kochin, facing relegation to the second division, are still on 14 points.

The local outfit put up a good fight initially, but failed to maintain the tempo and paid the penalty. The Goans midfield functioned smoothly and dominated the exchanges.

The goal-bound move emanated from the Kochin half, where Luciano got possession of a stray ball. He positioned himself well and let go a powerful 25 yarder, beating Kochin 'keeper Ali Abubaker hands down.

Down by a goal, the local outfit increased the pace of the game and were unlucky not to have found the equaliser in the dying minutes when striker Bijumon messed up the opportunity with Vasco custodian Rogerio Ramos at his mercy.
