Namrata Shirodkar

Claim to fame:

Former Miss India and actress.

How Net savvy are you? How would you rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10?

I am very Net savvy. I'd give myself a 10 on 10.

What do you enjoy doing on the Net?

I check my email. It's the easiest way to get in touch with family abroad. I don't surf unless I have a reason to. It's on a need-to-know basis.

What is your daily routine like? How much time do you spend online?

Most of the time I spend on the Net is work oriented. Otherwise I am online just for the time it takes to send mails to friends abroad.

What would your Web site be like?

It would have to be very informative, for sure. It also has to be pleasing to the eye for me to enjoy doing what I am doing. Colorful sites are fun. The site should be attractive enough for me to navigate further.

Any favourite sites?

Any site that serves my purpose is good enough. If I do not get what I am looking for in a particular site I will obviously go to another. I log on to Web sites that help my work. I am not stuck to a particular site. Yahoo and Hotmail are the basic ones. I visit Rediff quite often too.

Have you bought or sold anything online?

Not sold; but I've ordered for shampoos from the States. I usually order stuff that you do not get here. I am not scared of using my credit card online. It's pretty safe.

What's your favourite Web gadget?

My laptop that I can't do without. I lug it around everywhere. Apart from my cell it is my second most prized possession.

What do you like most about the Net?

Speedy communication. My sister is in New Zealand and at the click of a button we are in touch. We chat for hours on the end which otherwise would be very expensive. The Net has definitely made the world a smaller place. It connects people who are on different parts of the globe. Also, it's so informative. You can get information on any subject at a click. It's a far more interesting mode of education than leafing through 500 pages of an encyclopedia, a dictionary or knowledge book.

What do you hate about it?

The fact that there is free access to adult sites for any age group. If children are not educated about sex and they have access to adult sites then it is not healthy.

Do you ego surf?

Somebody told me about this guy in Manila who has linked my name to an adult Web site. If someone were to type, they would probably be taken to an adult site. There is nothing you can do to stop this. Much as the Net is interesting and exciting, it is disheartening to know about such things as well. I guess that's the price you pay when your name means a lot to people.

Have you chatted with strangers?

Never. I do not believe in chatting with strangers.

Is there any celebrity you would like to chat with?

On the serious side, it would be an enlightening conversation with the Pope. On the lighter side, I would like to chat with Brad Pitt.

Do you download music and pictures?

I had to download pictures of mine and send it across to certain people for work purpose. I do download music, which is pleasing to the ears; the kind of music I understand.

What would you like to change about the Net?

I don't think it is ever possible, but I wish there was some kind of litigation against abuse of the Net. There should be certain rules and regulations that one needs to abide to. It is such a vast domain but I wish I could do something about this.

If the Net didn't exist?

I wouldn't know any better. As the saying goes, "what you don't know doesn't hurt".
