Dawoodi Bohra community members in Mumbai celebrated the birthday of their spiritual leader Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, who turned 100 on Friday.

The Syedna delivered a sermon in Mumbai on Friday morning to thousands of Bohris in Bhendi Bazaar, after which people queued up to greet him.

On Sunday, the community has organised a procession along Marine Drive where the spiritual leader will be carried in an open carriage.

The lanes of Bhendi Bazaar, known as the 'Bohri mohalla', have been lit up.

The community also launched a long-term 'Cook Healthy, Eat Healthy' programme that will involve educative workshops for Bohri cooks around the world to teach them healthy and hygienic cooking.

The birthday celebrations started a month earlier, with events like car rally, medical camps, trade fairs and mass marriages.

The Syedna is the 52nd Dai (spiritual leader) of the Dawoodi Bohra community, and succeeded his father Syedna Taher Saifuddin in 1965.
