Anna writes to PM; supporters held near PM's home

Last updated on: August 25, 2011 16:36 IST

Amid continuing deadlock between government and Team Anna Hazare on Lokpal, the Gandhian on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue.

"Anna has written a letter to the Prime Minister and a response is awaited. Once Anna gets the reply, he will brief you," activist Manish Sisodia told Hazare's supporters.

However, the contents of Hazare's letter were not disclosed by Sisodia.

The letter was sent through senior Maharashtrian leader and Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who met the Gandhian who is on his tenth day of his fast.

Sources said Hazare has sought written assurances from the government on some issues in the Lokpal bill.

Following Dr Singh's speech, Lok Sabha unanimously appealed to Hazare to end his hunger strike as his life was "much too precious".

The Prime Minister had on August 23 reached out to him with an appeal for ending fast and a promise that his Jan Lokpal Bill could be considered by Parliament along with the government draft.

Meanwhile, several people were detained near the high security area of Prime Minister's residence as they gathered to hold an agitation demanding a strong Lokpal in line with Team Hazare's call.

The protesters, who came in small groups, were stopped by police near the Prime Minister's 7, Race Course Road residence and were taken into custody.

The protesters were bundled into DTC buses and were taken out from the high security area, police sources said.

They had gathered to hold a protest at 5 pm, demanding a strong Lokpal following a call by Team Anna Hazare to hold an agitation there.
