Lok Janshakti Party headed by Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan Saturday announced its decision to go it alone in the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry and have a tie up with Congress in West Bengal.
In Assam, the party intends to contest 30 seats, but is still in the process of finding electoral allies, Paswan told reporters in New Delhi.
The LJP chief said he would visit Assam on March 27 and 28 to campaign in five constituencies going to the polls in the first phase. He would also meet leaders of other parties during his visit to the state.
Paswan said LJP would contest 10 seats in West Bengal in alliance with Congress.
To a question whether the outcome of the assembly polls in five states would have a bearing on the Congress-led coalition at the Centre, he said since United Progressive Alliance was only at the Centre and not in the states, its constituents were free to chart out their independent course.
On the office of profit controversy, he said Congress president Sonia Gandhi had set a high moral standard by resigning from the Lok Sabha and as National Advisory Council chairperson "though there was no need for her to resign".
Asked if the spate of resignations over the issue could herald mid-term polls in the country, he said there was no such threat at the moment.
Paswan also refused to be drawn into the debate on whether the existing law should be amended by a bill or ordinance or whether members of Parliament enjoying office of profit should resign.
