8 Bridge Collapses That Shook India

The 40-year-old Gambhira bridge over Mahisagar river that collapsed July 9, killing 9, was a lifeline for the traffic bound for Saurashtra.

India has had several tragic bridge collapses in recent years. Here's a listing of a few of them.

Pune, Maharashtra

At Kundmala, in Pune’s Maval area, a bridge spanning the Indrayani river was washed away on June 15, 2025, killing 4 persons and leaving 18 others badly hurt.

Samruddhi Expressway, Maharashtra

During the 3rd construction phase of the Samruddhi Expressway in August 2023, a crane collapsed onto a bridge segment in Thane district, killing 20 project workers and injuring 3.

Sairang, Mizoram

Nearly 20 km from Aizawl, in August 2023, an under-construction railway bridge came crashing down, and claimed the lives of at least 26 workers.

Morbi, Gujarat 

In October 2022, some 135 persons died when a newly-refurbished British-era suspension bridge over the Machchhu river, connecting revered sites Mahaprabhuji and Samakantha, gave way.

Narmadapuram District, Madhya Pradesh

A bridge over the dry Sukthwa river, dating back to 1865, collapsed in April 2022 when a 138-wheeled heavy transport vehicle went over it. There were no fatalities.

Mumbai, Maharashtra

in March 2019, at CSMT in Fort, Mumbai, a section of a walkway linking the busy railway terminus to Badruddin Tyabji lane broke apart and crashed onto the main avenue below. Six were killed and 30 wounded in the mishap.

Kolkata, West Bengal

In 2018, the Majerhat bridge, positioned along Diamond Harbour Road in Kolkata’s Alipore area, crumbled. The disaster claimed 27 lives and left 80 seriously injured.
