Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut's brother held for house breaking

October 11, 2010 21:07 IST
Five Shiv Sena workers, including the brother of Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut, were arrested on Monday in connection with a case of theft and house breaking after the Bombay high court rapped the police for not initiating any action in the case.

In 2008, the five accused -- Sunil Raut, Ramesh Gavkar, Atul Keluskar, Jitendra Joshi and Manish Redkar -- had barged into the office of a fishermen association in Bhandup, said Rajkumar Wakale, senior inspector at Kanjurmarg police station.

"Sanjay Raut's brother Sunil and four other Sena workers had broken open the office, which was under renovation and ransacked it. They even took away the belongings of the association," he said.

"The reason behind this attack appears to be political," said Wakale adding that the five have been released on personal bond of Rs 10,000 each on Monday evening.

As no action was initiated against the accused, fishermen association president Sakaram Maladkar had approached the high court, which pulled up the police and ordered them to take action in pursuance to the complaint. Subsequently, the five were held on Monday.

Last year, Sunil and 19 Sena workers were arrested in connection with the attack on the office of a Marathi news channel in Mumbai accusing it of airing reports portraying Sena chief Bal Thackeray in poor light.
