Insisting that he believed in 'sympathy and forgiveness', Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said on Friday that he would be 'extremely compassionate' with regard to Sarabjit Singh, sentenced to death for allegedly carrying out bomb blasts in 1990.
He, however, said he would have to look at the issue as a 'matter of legality', as Sarabjit had 'killed civilians' in Pakistan.
"I believe in sympathy, compassion and forgiveness," Musharraf told reporters in New York. He was replying to questions on the fate of Sarabjit, who Islamabad claims is Manjit Singh. "I will be extremely compassionate," the Pakistani leader said, adding, however, that he would need to see 'legality' of the matter.
Sarabjit has been sentenced to death for the 1990 bomb blasts after Pakistani authorities presented him as Manjit, an Indian spy. India has said Pakistan has got Sarabjit's identity wrong and he should be released.
