Abu Salem's companion back on extradition trial

Last updated on: October 09, 2003 19:36 IST

Portugal's supreme court has stayed a trial court order rejecting an Indian government request to extradite underworld don Abu Salem's companion Monica Bedi.

The court has ordered recommencement of proceedings against her.

The direction followed a Central Bureau of Investigation's review petition through the Portugal's prosecutor general challenging the trial court's order, an agency source said.

Rejecting the extradition request, the trial court had said in July that Bedi could be tried in Portugal for she had committed an offence in Portugal similar to the one she was wanted for in India.

The supreme court after examining written submissions of both the sides directed the trial court to recommence the extradition trial.

The extradition trial of Salem is also in its last leg.
